Tackle
Shore fishing in the sea doesn't need expensive gear. Here is a simple, proven kit for horse mackerel and red mullet.
Rod and reel
A versatile choice is a 2.7–4 m rod rated up to 40–60 g and a 2000–3000 size spinning reel. A stiffer rod is better for sabiki, a light and sensitive one for red mullet. Rinse everything in fresh water after each trip: salt destroys reels quickly.
Sabiki rig for horse mackerel
- Main line 0.25–0.35 mm.
- Droppers 0.15–0.2 mm, 5–10 cm long, 25–40 cm apart.
- 5–10 hooks, size 6–8, with feathers, tubing or tinsel.
- A 20–60 g sinker at the end, depending on depth and current.
Ledger for red mullet
- Main line 0.2–0.25 mm or thin braid.
- A 10–30 g pear or flat sinker that doesn't roll.
- 1–2 hook lengths of 0.12–0.16 mm, 20–40 cm long.
- Long-shank hooks, size 10–14.
Float rod
A 3–6 g sliding float, 0.2 mm line, 0.14–0.16 mm hook length, size 8–12 hook. Works for mackerel at a jetty and for red mullet over sand.
Useful extras
- A long-handled landing net — essential on a high pier.
- A keepnet or bucket and a cool box with ice.
- Knife, hook remover, towel.
- Hat, sunscreen, water.
- Non-slip shoes for breakwaters.
Safety: don't fish from breakwaters in a storm or strong onshore wind, keep off wet rocks at the water's edge, and never leave hooks or line on the shore.
