Getting started

You don't need expensive gear for your first sea trip. A 3–4 m rod, a spinning reel, thin line and a couple of ready-made sabiki rigs are enough to catch horse mackerel from a pier. For red mullet you need a light bottom rig, small hooks and bait: ragworm, shrimp or mussel.

Where to fish

The easiest spots are piers, jetties and breakwaters: from them you can reach 3–8 m of water where both species feed. Horse mackerel often come to lit jetties in the evening. Look for red mullet over clean sand and where sand meets rock. A boat opens up more options: mackerel schools hold at 10–30 m and are easy to find with a sonar.

Before fishing, check the current local fishing rules: closed areas (harbours, beaches in the swimming season, reserves) and limits change. Never fish from breakwaters in a storm — the rocks are slippery and waves can come suddenly.
